I have couple of hitachi nailers with stainless steel nails but i think we need one specially design for tongue and groove siding.
Nails for tongue and groove siding.
Drive the nails through the shoulder of the tongues into the framing at about a 45 degree angle.
I don t want to face nail it and going even with small heads is not that easy.
As such it s possible to use 15 gauge nails with lengths of 1 inch 1 5 inches or 2 inches.
Start at the bottom and work up with the groove edges facing downwards and the tongues up.
If the siding is up to 6 inches wide it can be nailed with one siding nail per bearing but siding any wider should use two nails per bearing.
The next grooved edge will hide the nail holes.
For jobs that will be left natural or threated with a clear or semi transparent finish we recommend our stainless steel slim jim nails.
Roofing nailers are designed for roofing nails which are short with a wide head.
Flooring nail guns are used to install tongue and groove hardwood floors.
Common gauges for nails used in tongue and groove installation include 15 16 17 and 18.
One of the cool things about tongue and groove walls is that you can use a technique called blind nailing if you do it properly you won t have any nail heads showing or holes to fill.
In horizontal application start at the bottom and work up with the groove edges facing downwards.
Siding up to 6 inches wide can be blind nailed with one siding nail per bearing toe nailed through the base of each tongue.
Slim sturdy shank and special blunt point virtually eliminate splits.
Nails must penetrate 1 1 4 inches into solid wood.
As the gauge of a nail increases the nail is smaller.
Framing nailers are for larger projects like framing out walls during construction or renovation.
For installing tongue and groove paneling you need 6d finishing nails.
Nail styles are often not interchangeable between nailers because the guns cannot handle every type of nail that is why there are different nailer types.
The tongue section of the board should be at the top with the groove section at the bottom.
They are activated with the tap of a mallet to deliver nails at the proper angle.
Checkered head helps to hold paint or stain.
These 2 inch long nails have a narrow head that sinks below the surface of the wood.
I have a job where we are installing tongue and groove vertical cedar siding.
Cedar t g up to 6 wide can be blind nailed through the tongue at an approximate 45 degree angle with one nail into each framing member.
Wider siding should be face nailed using two nails per piece.
The gauge of a nail has nothing to do with its length.
This is part 1 of a 3 part series.
If you have any idea please let me know.
