Like their polypropylene counterparts polyester shag rugs are stain resistant and hypoallergenic. Alternatively you can fill a spray bottle with water and use it to slightly dampen the rug before painting. After placing it you can doodle on it with a paintbrush or load a custom image into it. Do not just go to the scrap pile of a carpet store the odds and ends that are usually small off cuts from jobs that the customers do not wish to keep. I love taking a pattern from a pillow or even trying to recreate the same pattern from a very expensive rug.
